September Newsletter 2004: Issue #9 Editor: David L. Miles

Back to Newsletter Index
Once again that special season is upon us when the frost starts to think about settling on future pumpkins. As in previous years, we are heralding harvest time with our annual Harvest Potluck. Dig out your favorite hearty recipes and gather for this celebration of our beautiful fall days, when the leaves should be approaching their peak and Applefest is right around the corner, the last full blast of Charlevoix's social year. (As for previous fall potlucks, your editor requests lightly on the squash, please. He despises squash. Author Russell Baker, who equally loathed it, rightly claimed it tastes like it sounds.)

When: Tuesday, October 5 @ 7pm
Where:
The Depot

Be sure to bring your own tableware and silver, plus a serving utensil for your dish if necessary. We provide napkins, beverages, and drinking cups. The Depot has two microwaves, a stove, and a fridge for warm-ups or a little preparatory work. See you there.

BECOME A "PILLAR" OF THE SOCIETY

Many of the Depot's exterior pillars are in need of replacement due to decades of exposure. The Society is instituting a new support program focused strictly on this project called "Pillars of the Society.: Those who contribute $100 or more toward this important and immediately essential restoration will be recognized as such. The affected uprights will be replaced with wood, not synthetic materials, and the new pillars will replicate the originals. All the work is being done locally by David Robinson, Rudy Scharschmidt, and Jim Lewis. Help us make one of Charlevoix's most important buildings look like new again.

MICHIGAN QUARTERS STILL AVAILABLE

Between thirty and forty of the new Michigan State Quarter set designated for the Society remain available at the Charlevoix State Bank, 111 State Street next to the Harsha House. Proceeds from the sale of these specially mounted coins benefit the Society. The sets would make perfect stocking stuffers for those on your Christmas list.

TRAIN SHOW AT DEPOT

Event co-ordinator Jim Lewis reports that the model train show, held in August over two three-day weekends, attracted approximately two hundred visitors to the Depot. These included curious walk-ins from the Depot Beach and Heritage Garden. Seven tables held eight operating trains and five display trains.

SEPTEMBER BOARD MEETING SUMMARY

All the Charlevoix school students have been invited to Harsha House to view out new pioneer founders photo and text exhibit. The museum store made just over $1100 in August. Harsha House brochures have been distributed to the thirteen Michigan Welcome Centers scattered throughout the state. The Charlevoix State Bank sponsored our new flag. Mary Adams and Mike Bergeon will head the 12th Night Party committee. The ticketmaster's office at the Depot will be restored but with usage as temporary storage space during exhibits and other functions. Co-director Steve Goslee is working on grant applications for next year's Native American exhibit at the Depot and other needs. One pillar has been restored at the Depot; at least five others should be done by spring. A dehumidifier and more shelving were approved for the Depot basement. Volunteers of the year honored at the ice cream social were Depot Heritage Garden chairs Joan Nowak, Patti Aiken, and Rhea Dow.
