January Newsletter 2005: Issue #1 Editor: David L. Miles

Back to Newsletter Index
For the seventh year now we are hosting one of our most popular events, the annual VALENTINE'S POTLUCK DINNER, complete with romantic music, heartwarming poetry recited by real lovers, readings from the past devoted to the topic of love, plus tales fictional, embellished, and absolutely true that make you go "awww!"

When: Tuesday, February 1 at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Depot

President Jack MacKenzie advises that the ticket of admission, as in previous years, will be one Valentine, more if you feel generous, that will go into a decorated box at the door. These will later be distributed to shut-ins and the elderly who may not be lucky enough to receive their own. Sign your name to them if you like, or just "A Secret Admirer."

Bring your wedding picture, which will be displayed and admired by all, and anecdotes of your meeting, courtship, and marriage. This was a big hit last year!

AND of course bring your most creative and delicious dish to pass (with emphasis on entrees, side dishes, and salads), plus your own plates and silver. We provide napkins, cups, and beverages. A microwave and refrigerator are available.

AND a special treat -- the wonderful local men's vocal group "The Alternotes" will sing romantic songs to swell your heart and lead us in an oldies singalong.

Games and prizes galore! You will have to work very hard not to win one. Guess jars and bingo! A surprise event to test your historical Charlevoix acumen, complete with historic photos!

As President MacKenzie so inimitably phrases it: "Again some of Charlevoix's loveliest young girls will be there. Again some of Charlevoix's loveliest, slightly more mature girls will be there. The men will look the best they can. This is the night to bring your sweetie pie and go home with the spark renewed. If you don't have a sweetie pie right now, come and see what might be available. No one is ever too old to hold hands."

Please join us for what has always been a very fun evening. This event is open to all, so bring a guest and spread the word. We hope to see you all there.

MUSEUM & OFFICE HOURS FOR JANUARY, FEBRUARY AND MARCH

The Harsha House Museum will be closed in January and perhaps the first part of February for the construction of badly needed storage cabinets. The office area (entry off the alley) will remain open, however, for store purchases and museum business during the regular hours of Tuesday through Saturday 1- 4 P. M. On reopening, February and March museum hours will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 1-4, with office hours five days a week same as before. In late March the museum will again close for about a week for the installation of new carpeting.

SUMMARY OF JANUARY BOARD MEETING

A color photo of the Harsha House should appear in the upcoming Phone Guide Yellow Pages. A slide projector and screen are being donated. The hospital's Holly Daze auction of an enlarged and framed historic photo brought us $175. The museum store took in $1459 in December. The museum store has a new cash register. The Society is working with the city on the establishment of historic districts. We are looking into the possibility of using old middle school gym wood flooring to replace flooring at the depot. The digitizing photo preservation project is nearing the 600 images saved mark. Our website has been linked to a Camp Charlevoix site. The successful 12th Night Party of January 5 netted $1628 for the Depot Heritage Garden. Only five 2005 Historic Photos calendars remain for sale.
