March Newsletter 2005: Issue #3 Editor: David L. Miles

Ever since Native Americans first touched our shores about one thousand years before the Golden Age of Greece, Charlevoix and its splendid natural harbor has been a magnet for vessels large and small through the centuries. For the past century and a half, after Medad and Phoebe Thompson arrived from a brief disappointing stay on Beaver Island and found this was a good place to put down roots, the first white family to do so, Charlevoix has seen an unending parade of boats from homely and utilitarian to breathtaking magnificent pass in and out of Round Lake. The sheer variety of types of vessels that have come here may not be surpassed by any other port on the Great Lakes.

Join us for an evening that will recall the maritime history that has defined our town when your editor, David L. Miles, presents a visual program entitled "Vessels in Charlevoix."

When: Tuesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Depot

The program will focus on the passenger steamers that brought us so many of our settlers and resorters (and often went up in flames), the liners that roamed the inland seas and twice went ashore on our beaches, schooners, lumber carriers, military vessels, the Beaver Island boats, Coast Guard vessels, freighters, a prison ship, tugs, a galleon placed on the shore of Boulder Park, lightships, ice boats, sidewheelers, a presidential yacht, and more.

This will be a fascinating look into Charlevoix's past. These visual programs are usually very well received and have drawn capacity attendance, so arrive early for a good seat. The event is open to the public. There is no admission charge.

TEMPORARY MUSEUM CLOSING

The Harsha House will be closed for at least a week, possibly two, around the latter part of March or the first part of April for the installation of new carpeting in the museum area. The current carpet is about twenty-five years old and beginning to show its age around the edges.

Museum co-directors David L. Miles and Steve Goslee will be in the office area, however, should anyone need to conduct Society business during their regular hours of 11 to 4 Tuesday through Saturday. Use the side door at the end of the white fence by the alley.

A THANK-YOU TO ANNE BANDFIELD

Member Anne Bandfield recently loaned the Society three scrapbooks and two envelopes full of photos assembled and mostly taken by her father, former shoe store owner and local history buff Don Campbell. Well over two hundred images, many of which concentrated on Mr. Campbell's lifelong love of Charlevoix's maritime heritage, were scanned and printed for our archives with permission to use for Society's activities. Several of them will be included in the April program at the Depot. We gratefully extend our appreciation to Anne for this generous gesture.
