Did you know that Charlevoix had a Main Street? Where was it? (Not where you might think.) How early did the settlement first known as Pine River have street names? Where was Rose Street? (It wasn't named after a flower.) Who were Alice and May Some of our street names are obvious, others real head-scratchers. Several of our most prominent and influential pioneers received no recognition at all, or a street length not in keeping with their early importance to the community. Where in Charlevoix can you still find noted British and American authors? Famous American historical names?

Find out the answers and stories, where known, when past Society President Dr. Jack MacKenzie reveals the results of a lot of research at our Power Point illustrated Street Names of Charlevoix historical program for October.

When: Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 6:00 p.m.
Where: The Depot

October is also the month for our annual fall harvest potluck, so we will combine the two, with dinner first. Bring your favorite dish, a serving utensil, and your own tableware and cutlery. (Your editor will not bore you again with tales about how he loathes squash [hint], but only mention it in passing.) We provide napkins, beverages, and drinking cups. The Depot has two microwaves, a fridge, a range and oven for warm-ups or a little preparatory work. See you all there. Or simply come for the program at 7:00.

Together, these funds in turn will contribute to matching a State funding grant of up to $40,000. A second anonymous grant of $10,000 has been received for 2006, and we are working now toward matching that.

KAREN PIERCE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Our congratulations to long-time Board member and former membership chair Karen Pierce for being honored as Volunteer of the Year at the Ice Cream Social at the Depot on September 5. Karen has devoted untold hours to many, many functions at Harsha House and the Depot and as a Board member over many years. We deeply appreciate her loyalty and interest in the past and we hope for many years to come. The Social saw one of the largest crowds we've ever had, with an evening so beautiful we moved outside under the portico for much good talk, a lot of ice cream and toppings, excellent music, and a full moon at the end of Lake Charlevoix. And out thanks Again to all the year's volunteers who have contributed to so many activities and events.

EXTRA EVENT IN NOVEMBER

Two days after our annual fund-raising spaghetti dinner at the Villager Pub on November 8, on Friday the 10th Rochelle Pennington, author of the book "The Christmas Tree Ship," will present a program on the Rouse Simmons at the Depot at 7:00. This ship is famous on the Great Lakes for sinking almost 100 years ago, with the loss of all hands, in a terrific December gale off Wisconsin while headed from the Upper Peninsula to Chicago loaded with her annual cargo of Christmas trees. A few years prior to this, the Rouse Simmons spent a winter in Round Lake.

The story was dramatized late last year on the Weather Channel. Mark your calendars.
