June Newsletter 2007: Issue #6 Editor: David L. Miles

Seemingly unlimited stocks of fish in Lake Michigan were what brought most of Charlevoix's pioneer settlers to our shores in the middle of the 1800s.  Since that time, the once abundant Great Lakes resource has decreased drastically as a result of  decades of overfishing, the lamprey eel,  industrial pollution, agricultural run-off, and now the introduction of foreign species as a result of globalized trade, all of which have contributed to the upset of the natural ecological balance.

Society President Paul Nowak, former professor and researcher in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan,  will present a program that will explore the consequences of this man-made problem titled "Fishing in Transition."

When: Tuesday, June 5 @ 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Depot

The program will be in three parts. The first part, an overview of the history of fishing in the Great Lakes, was designed for Michigan Sea Grant to explain what has happened to the fish stocks from the last Ice Age to 1965, and to inform citizens of the problems the fish have faced throughout this time period. It has been used in college classrooms as well as a variety of citizens meetings.

The second part will be a review of fishing activities in and around Charlevoix using images from the Society's photo collection.  The third part will be a short conversation with Sam Williamson, President of the Lake Charlevoix Association, that will examine some of the current activities of the group and some of the current issues facing Lake Charlevoix.

Join us for a program that will be of great interest not only for its exploration of how this issue has historically affected and still affects Charlevoix, but all of northern lower Michigan.

There is no admission charge. Light refreshments will be served by John Cross Fisheries.

REPEATS OF HISTORIC PROGRAMS

By popular request, Dr. Jack MacKenzie will be repeating his two programs on the history of Charlevoix’s street names in the Community Room of the Charlevoix Public Library on Monday, July 9 and Monday, July 16, both at 7:00 P. M.   The original showings of these programs were extremely well attended at the Depot.  These repeat presentations will allow our seasonal members, summer residents and many of our summertime guests a chance to discover a fascinating aspect of our history.

The Earl Young program on May 1 ran into a computer glitch that prevented over half of the images from being projected. Your editor has agreed to show the program again, this time in two parts to do the life and works of Earl Young the full justice they deserve. The first part will focus on his early years and residential structures (over twenty) from the late 1920s into the 1950s. The second part will emphasize his commercial buildings of the 1950s and 1960s, plus his last three houses, primarily focused on the Weathervane Inn and the circumstances that almost caused its destruction in the early 1970s, with a summing up of his design philosophy, unorthodox building techniques, and regional influence.  Times and place to be announced.

BOSSES RECEIVE BOB MILES AWARD

Almost seventy people filled the Depot on April 26 for a potluck dinner to recognize Marilyn and Dale Boss for their years of contribution to Charlevoix.  A summary of their many activities was read, a short pictorial history was projected, a few poems recited by Rosalyn Goldstick, some stories told, and the Society's Bob Miles Award was presented by your editor.  This award, named after Charlevoix photographer and historian Bob Miles, recognizes contributions "to Historical Research and Preservation of the Historical Record in the Charlevoix Area."

RED CROSS SAILBOAT BEING MADE FOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A few years ago it was fish, a couple of years later we saw bears (one stands near the main entry door of the new library, painted with a road map of northwest lower Michigan), and now it’s sailboats that are the theme of the Red Cross’ 2007 artworks fundraising program.  Local artist Lyn Jenks has been commissioned to create one for the Historical Society.  She has chosen over fifty images from our files that she will prepare and apply to the sails as a photomontage of Charlevoix history.  The boat’s permanent home has yet to be determined, either at the Harsha House or the Depot.  These unique creations are displayed in towns around the north before they are auctioned off at Bay Harbor for the benefit of the Red Cross, but this particular one has already been earmarked for us.  So our deepest thanks to the donors and to Lyn for providing the Society with an unusual and beautiful creation that will provide visual enjoyment and comment for many years to come.

"HISTORY OF BRIDGE STREET" BOOK ON PRESS

The “History of Bridge Street” written by former shoe store owner P. D. “Don” Campbell and serialized in fifteen installments in the Charlevoix Courier in 1967 has been made into a book published for us by his daughter, Society member Anne Bandfield.  It is currently on the press and should be available after Memorial Day.  The book traces the history of downtown, the channel, and the harbor plus a few places on the side streets as Don remembered them from his arrival in Charlevoix in 1897, with reminiscences of people, places, and events.  The main course of the history proceeds from the bridge south along the west side of Bridge Street, then crosses over at Antrim to retrace its path north along the east (Round Lake) side.  The text is augmented by over eighty classic images from the Society’s photo archives that illustrate specific points in the text, most of them never published before.  The book is softcover, 8.5" by 11”, with 96 pages, and will retail for $19.95.
