EARL YOUNG PROGRAM REPEAT Last May your editor presented a program on “The Life and Works of Earl Young,” unfortunately truncated due to a computer malfunction that prevented several of the images from being projected. The illustrated program is being repeated, with the co-sponsorship of the Friends of the Charlevoix Public Library, this time in two parts to do full justice to the remarkable life and achievements of the one man who did more than any other to place an image of Charlevoix in the awareness of the world. When: Thursday, August 2 and Thursday, August 9 both evenings @ 7:00 P. M. Where: Charlevoix Public Library Community Room 220 Clinton Street Part 1 will focus on Earl Young’s early years and the creation of his first twenty-two residential structures found in Boulder Park, on Park Avenue, and on Grant and Clinton Streets. Part 2 will investigate the second phase of his career, the commercial structures near the bridge: The Lodge Motel, the Weathervane Terrace Inn, and the Weathervane Inn restaurant. The latter is a story in itself from its amazing construction to the fact it came dangerously to sliding into the channel in the early 1970s, when man and nature both unwittingly conspired to undermine the structure. It was saved by an historic artifact that could be held in one hand. The program will conclude with a look at his last three houses, his unorthodox design process and building methods, his area influence, and a summing up of his legacy. Join us for a fascinating look at Charlevoix’s own true American original. There is no admission charge. Light refreshments will be served. MUSEUM SUMMER HOURS The Harsha House Museum will be open Monday through Saturday 1 to 4 P. M. through Labor Day weekend. Co-director Steve Goslee will be there Monday through Wednesday, and co-director David L. Miles will be there Thursday through Saturday. The side office door continues to be open from 11:00 A. M. to 4:00 P. M. each day. |
