Spaghetti Dinner at Villager!

It’s that time of year again!  Stalwart Society volunteers and Board members tie on aprons, don running shoes, memorize a long list of three items, and once again demonstrate their dazzling wait staff skills honed over many past seasons at Terry Left’s Villager Pub for our annual all-you-can eat spaghetti dinner.

This is our eleventh outing for one of our major fund-raisers.  Terry is donating ALL proceeds from the $7.50 spaghetti and garlic bread portion of the menu entirely to the Society!  On top of that, ALL tips come to the Society also!  These funds will go toward general support which in the past has helped with the restoration of the Depot (now almost completed) and the ongoing photo archives digitization project, among many other Society activities.

When: Wednesday, November 5 from 5 to 9 P. M.

Where: The Villager Pub, 427 Bridge Street at Antrim Street

Additional Menu Items: 2-piece Whitefish Basket with Cole Slaw and Fries: $8.95; Burritos: $8.95

Again we will have door prizes! Grand prize is dinner for two at Terry’s Place restaurant, second prize a 2009 Historic Photos calendar, third a 2008 Christmas bulb ornament showing a red lighthouse against a blue and white background.

Join us for an always fun evening of excellent food and good company, for an always good cause.  Our thanks once more to Terry and his patient and supportive crew for teaching us how to keep our thumbs out of the spaghetti, and for helping to make these events such a success.  (The evening will also be non-smoking restaurant-wide).

MUSEUM FALL HOURS

A reminder of our fall hours—the Harsha House museum remains open until the end of the year from Tuesday through Saturday 1-4 P. M. (except Thanksgiving and Christmas Days), with the side office door open at 11 A. M. until 4 P. M.   Now is the time to start thinking about Christmas shopping in the museum store.  The museum will be closed January and February.

LIGHTHOUSE RESTORATION "PHASE 1" COMPLETED

The first phase of the lighthouse restoration project was successfully completed late this summer after major exterior and interior work sealed the structure.   Much rust was scraped and removed, the topmost lens lantern house reglazed, the ventilation ball on top and lower ventilation holes cleaned out, smaller windows reset, rotted wood replaced and painted, and separated seams resecured.   Funds raised to achieve these goals have been fully reimbursed by the State Historic Preservation Office.  Plans and specifications for the second phase are 75% complete.  This phase, which will take place next summer, will be completion of the remaining exterior work followed by a repainting of the lighthouse in its historically correct hue of Lighthouse Red.

Fundraising for Phase II continues.  Members who so generously contributed toward the successful completion of the first phase are asked to keep this ongoing project in mind, and members new to the Society are asked to help with the second and future phases to return one of the prime symbols of Charlevoix to pristine condition. A reminder to Michigan members: when it comes time to replace your license plates, keep in mind the Michigan Lighthouse plate.  Sales of these plates go toward the funding of lighthouse restoration statewide; the money raised goes toward no other state fund.   Charlevoix’s light has already benefited.
