Valentine Potluck! Old Flick!

It’s time for our annual Valentine Potluck Dinner!  Last year’s was so enjoyable we are repeating the format.  Once the tables are cleared after an always excellent meal, we are going to settle back again for an old-time silent movie night complete with popcorn!  On our silver screen for the evening?  Past President Jack MacKenzie has chosen one of the all-time greats, Charlie Chaplin’s classic “City Lights,” on every list of the best 100 movies ever made.

When: Tuesday, February 3 @ 6:00 P. M.

Where: The Depot

Remember when Saturday double features at the Palace Theater on Bridge Street used to cost 14 cents? Plus a brown paper bag of Maud Glados’ popcorn, awash in warm butter from her cubbyhole next door, was an extra dime?  In keeping with the tradition of previous years, instead of a ticket price, we ask everyone to bring a Valentine, either signed or from “A Secret Admirer” as their entrance fee.  We will have a decorated box at the door to collect them.  They will later be distributed to shut-ins and the elderly who may not receive one.  You don’t have to stop at just one—bring several cards if you wish.

We may have prizes, and there may be a movie quiz.  Jack is thinking hard about these.

And! Society member Rosalyn Goldstick has reprinted her book of poetry “Do You Remember?,” reminiscences of Charlevoix people, places, and events over many years, that sold out in 2007.  She and illustrator Marilyn Boss will be on hand to sell and personally sign the new edition ($12.95).  A portion of the proceeds will go toward support of the Society.  Now is the time to obtain your copy if you don’t have one!

So join us for a delicious repast, good company, then laugh at and shed a tear with The Little Tramp.  Bring a dish to pass, a serving utensil, and your own plates and tableware.  We will supply coffee, tea, cups, and napkins, and microwaves if needed.

MUSEUM WINTER HOURS

The museum will be closed January and February.  The side office door will remain open from 11 A. M. to 4 P. M. Tuesday - Saturday for those who need to conduct Society business or make a purchase from the museum store.  The museum will reopen in March three days a week (Thursday—Saturday 1-4).

EARL YOUNG DVD SELLING VERY WELL

The Society’s newest production, the 1’45” DVD titled “The Life and Works of Earl Young, Charlevoix’s Master Builder in Stone,” sold over one hundred copies in two weeks beginning December 24.  One has been ordered from as far away as Barrow, Alaska near the Arctic Circle.  They have been mailed to California, Florida, New York City and several places in between.  We have much confidence that it will be a success, and are now in the talking stages of producing even more DVDs on various Charlevoix historical topics based upon past programs and exhibits.  To obtain your copy(s), come to the Harsha House (side door this month and next), use the order form in last month’s newsletter, download an order form from our website, or simply call or e-mail us with your ordering information.

BLACKBOARD NEEDED FOR DEPOT

We would like to obtain a good sized blackboard to hang on the wall of the about-to-be restored ticket master’s office at the Depot.  If anyone has one or knows of one, please call the Harsha House, 547-0373, or Karen Lewis at 547-9743.
