Park Avenue Prowl Program

One of the oldest sections of Charlevoix is the area around the south side of the channel bridge. This is where  many of the first houses and commercial structures went up, then gradually spread south and west and along the Round Lake waterfront. The northwest corner of Park Avenue and Bridge Street is especially rich in history. Raechel Wright, owner of the Alcove Café on Park, has researched this area and beyond to the point that she discovered enough information to form a walking brochure and website called The Park Avenue Prowl. The  tour encompasses both sides of Park Avenue past the Earl Young houses to Clinton Street, Lake Michigan  Beach, and the new library.

Join us as Raechel, assisted by Georganna Monk, tells in an illustrated program how she went about her research to form historical portraits of the people and buildings she encountered along the way, and how she discovered that her café is in what may be Charlevoix’s oldest existing building.

When: Tuesday, April 7 @ 7:00 P. M.

Where: The Depot

Light refreshments will be served. For more information on the Prowl and the sites it covers, visit Raechel’s website at www.charlevoixparkavenue.com

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

There’s a great project going on at the Harsha House. Mini-histories of the area are being compiled with generous servings of old photos from the Society’s fantastic archival collection. Already there’s one finished product, focused on a history of the channel, piers, and lighthouses, for sale at the museum store. Soon there will be another on the coming of the railroad. These little books are delightful.  Don’t miss them.

Coming this summer will be a major change in the cosmetics of our fair city. The lighthouse will turn red. As you know, research indicated that this is the proper historic color, and though opinion is still somewhat divided, we’re eager to see this new look happening.

Another new project this summer will be the relocation of preserved sections of the old scored pavement from Chicago Avenue leading down to the Depot and Depot Beach which was replaced last fall with a brand new surface. Large sections of the historic paving will be placed next to the new street on the grounds of the Depot, along with a plaque telling about them. The architectural firm of HopkinsBurns of Ann Arbor has been most helpful, at no cost to the Society, in advising about and planning this display. Gene Hopkins and Tamara Burns have been very generous with their time and expertise. We thank them very sincerely, more than mere words can express. We also thank Chuck Unbehaun who introduced these kind folks to our Society. Your enterprise is greatly appreciated, Chuck!

I am looking forward to seeing you at the Park Avenue Prowl program in April, and at David Miles’ program on the history of the hotels in Charlevoix coming in May. They will be wonderful, as always. Best wishes to you all.

President Mona Bergeon
