New Earl Young Exhibit
To coincide with the production of our new DVD on “The Life and Works of Earl Young,” and the publication of new patron Mike Barton’s recent book “The Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix,” the Harsha House is in the final stages of mounting an exhibit on Young and his creations.
Earl Young’s importance to Charlevoix has been an established fact for decades. People have and continue to come from all over the country and abroad to marvel at what he accomplished, and in the process find out how much more Charlevoix has to offer. As visitors take away word of what they have discovered, more and more people are making this town a destination. Almost every day in the summer sees tour buses heading west for the sole purpose of viewing the Young homes along Park Avenue and Grant Street and in Boulder Park.
This new exhibit features photos from both the DVD and Mike’s book, plus some from the Society’s archives. All the buildings displayed will have brief notations regarding address, date of construction, and the names by which some of them are known. The exhibit is intended to summarize Earl Young’s life and career, which information is expanded upon in the DVD, then beautifully rendered in full color in the book as the buildings look today from many angles.
We urge all our members to bring their summertime guests to view this unique and intriguing tribute.

A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT MONA BERGEON
Those of you who missed the presentation by David Miles of the history of Charlevoix’s Hotels will possibly be able to catch a “re-run” this summer. A repeat performance is being discussed. Be sure not to miss it. The consensus among the numerous attendees at the May meeting was that the lecture was fun and highly informative; an enlightening time was had by all. Some of the things that took place in Charlevoix over the years have been remarkable on a national scale. Great job, David!
You may have noticed that the Bridge Street display of goods available at the Harsha House Museum store has moved. The former Shop of the Gulls at 205 Bridge Street is our current location; a million thanks to Jeannine Wallace! The old Murdick’s shop had been made available to us for a long time. Having the array of merchandise in evidence there was a tremendous boost to sales. We are sincerely grateful to the Murdicks for allowing our use, free of charge, of their windows, and wish them the very best with new tenants.
By now you should have received your invitation to join the Society’s Ralph Hamilton Circle and attend the “wine and cheese” party we’re planning by way of thanks for your support. It will be a lovely event; do join us. Most of you know that Ralph Hamilton was one of the original founders of the renewed Historical Society in 1972, and was an active participant his entire adult life. He would be very pleased to see a large turnout at his party! The date is July 2. Write it on your calendar.
I’m off to visit my adorable great-granddaughter for a few days. How blessed am I! I look forward to seeing you in July.
