Ice Cream Social at Depot

Here we are again, at summer’s  climax, wondering where it all went. The season was late arriving this year, but once the beautiful and unusually cooler days did arrive they went by in too much of a hurry.  Now our traditional end-of-summer event is upon us, one of the nicest evenings of the year when we thank and honor our volunteers—the annual Ice Cream Social.

When: Tuesday, September 1 @ 7:00 P. M.

Where: the Depot

Music for the occasion will be provided by our old favorites, the Tagalongs. This country group was formed thirty-seven years ago and has performed for countless dances and parties in grange halls, barns, churches, and meeting halls around northern Michigan.

The evening is not limited to Society members. Feel free to bring guests and friends who might be here enjoying the last week of summer. Join us in the Depot Heritage Garden for good company, good music, ice cream plus toppings, and that always spectacular view down Lake Charlevoix.

SHIRT LEFT AT POTLUCK

A grey L. L. Bean man’s long sleeve shirt, neck size 17, was found at the Depot after the Venetian potluck.   Call the Harsha House if it’s yours or you know the owner.

MUSEUM HOURS THROUGH DECEMBER 31

The Harsha House Museum will be open 1-4 P. M. Tuesday to Saturday through the end of the year. The side office door facing the bank will be open from 11 A. M. to 1 P. M. for those who need to conduct Society business or purchase store items during off hours.

TRAIN SHOW A BIG HIT

The 3-day model train show at the Depot in late July-early August was a great success, drawing over 337 people from all over the north country. They were very complimentary about the work we’ve done to restore and preserve the Depot. The attendees were a mixture of model train fans, railroad buffs, and those who remembered our Depot. One lady first came to Charlevoix on the train in 1914 and for many years afterward.

Special thanks to Karen and Terry Lewis and Betsy Reynolds for preparing the railroad history exhibits and greeting guests, and to Jerry Corley, Rudy Scharschmidt, Paul Hoelderle, and Dan Fialkowski for loaning, setting up the layouts, and operating their trains. Merchandise sales and donations brought in $1300. A big thank you to all who attended.

“PHOTO DETECTIVE” AT LIBRARY IN SEPTEMBER

The “Photo Detective,” Maureen Taylor, an internationally recognized expert on solving the mysteries contained in old photographs, will be featured at the library on Friday, September 18 at 7:00 P. M. Ms. Taylor’s keynote address, “Tales from the Photo Detective,” will incorporate examples of photographs she has worked on through the years and the clues that brought the pictures to life. Prior to the lecture, the library’s Michigan Room Committee will present the seventh annual Margaret Duerr Book Award. This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated a special interest in the quality of life in Northern Michigan. This year’s recipient is John M. Frey. Mr. Frey has contributed over many years to several area and State environmental, artistic, and educational organizations and programs.

Ms. Taylor will conduct workshops and do photo consultations on September 19. Information regarding fees, hours, and a luncheon offering can be obtained at the library or by visiting the library website at www.charlevoixlibrary.org. Registration forms for the workshops may also be obtained at the library or on the library website.
