Annual Harvest Potluck!

Even though the days continue to be warm, they are growing shorter and the trees are just beginning to display their fall colors. That wonderful time of year is upon us once more. Again the Society celebrates the turning with our annual Harvest Potluck just before the official climax of the tourist season—Applefest Weekend when the town is packed to the gills.

When: Tuesday, October 6 @ 6:00 P. M.

Where: The Depot

Dig out your favorite hearty recipe and gather with us for this celebration of our all too few invigorating autumn days. (This is the point where, by longstanding tradition, your editor pleads with you—go lightly on the squash! I detest squash! Author Russell Baker hit the nail on the head when he said “It tastes like it sounds. But don’t let that influence you.)

Be sure to bring your own tableware and silver, plus a serving utensil for your dish if necessary. We provide napkins, beverages, and drinking cups. The Depot has microwaves, a fridge, a range and oven for a little preparatory work, plus electrical outlets for warming dishes.

Everyone is welcome to bring guests. The event is open to the public. Entertainment yet to be determined.

MUSEUM HOURS THROUGH DECEMBER 31

The Harsha House Museum will be open 1-4 P. M. Tuesday to Saturday through the end of the year except for Christmas and Thanksgiving. The side office door facing the bank will be open from 11 A. M. to 1 P. M. for those who need to conduct Society business or purchase store items during off hours.

ITEMS FOUND AT DEPOT AND HARSHA HOUSE

No one has yet claimed the grey long sleeve L. L. Bean men’s shirt, neck size 17, mentioned in the August newsletter. It was left at the Depot the night of the Venetian potluck, July 24. Found inside the Depot on July 22 were a pair of eyeglasses, large, non-bifocal, thin steel frames, presumably a man’s.

One earring for a pierced ear was found outside the Harsha House rear entrance in the parking area—a twisted circular silver ring with a large white glass bead suspended in the middle.

Call the Harsha House if these items are yours or you know their owners.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The annual Ice Cream Social, held in the Depot Garden on a perfectly beautiful evening, was the occasion for thanks to CHS volunteers. Most community organizations need help, and folks who are able and willing spend countless hours and resources providing it. The Historical Society has what is probably the greatest need, because there is no alternative for us. We receive no routine tax dollars and have no resources but those coming from the kindness and generosity of caring members. We have two part-time employees: hard as they work, there is no way the CHS could have accomplished the extensive (and expensive!) renovations, preservations, programs and educational achievements already completed. It was an honor to mingle with many of you who have done so much.

An elegant and lovely place built and maintained by the Charlevoix Garden Club (THANK YOU!), the Depot Garden was graced by the delightful music of the Tagalongs (THANK YOU!). Our Volunteer of the Year is Chuck Unbehaun. He may be a relative newcomer to the Board, but his contributions have been awesome. He has a way of seeing things that need to be done, making a suggestion to which all agree, and executing the completion of the project. He truly is the ideal volunteer: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! We’re so fortunate to count you as one of ours, Chuck!

We’ll be looking forward to the Potluck at the Depot in October, and the Spaghetti Dinner at the Pub in November. Watch your bulletin. Speaking of which, we would like to start using e-mail more and would appreciate the receipt of your e-mail address ASAP. Give Harsha House a quick call, or send a note to chxhistory@sbcglobal.net

Have a beautiful fall season!
