Valentine Potluck!
Chaplin Flick!

It’s time for our annual Valentine Potluck Dinner! The past two years were so enjoyable we’re repeating the format. Once the tables are cleared, we’ll settle back for an old-time silent movie night complete with popcorn!  Gracing our silver screen for the evening? One of the all-time greats, Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” with Jackie Coogan, near the top of the long list of Chaplin classics. Come join us for many laughs and a tear or two as only the Little Tramp knew how to do.

When: Tuesday, February 2 @ 6:00 P. M.

Where: The Depot

Remember when Saturday night double features at the Palace used to cost 14 cents? A brown paper bag of Maud Glados’ popcorn, soaked in melted butter from her cubbyhole next to the theater, was an extra dime? In keeping with the tradition of many previous years, instead of a ticket price, we ask everyone to bring a Valentine card or two, either signed or from “A Secret Admirer” as the entrance fee. We will have a decorated box at the door to collect them. They will later be distributed to shut-ins and the elderly who may not receive one.

Bring a dish to pass, a serving utensil, and your own plates and tableware. We will supply coffee, tea, cups, and napkins, plus microwaves if needed.

MUSEUM & STORE HOURS THROUGH FEBRUARY

The museum will be closed the rest of January and all of February, and will reopen on Thursday, March 4. But the side office door facing the Charlevoix State Bank will remain open from 11 A. M. to 4 P.M. for those who need to conduct Society business or make a store purchase.

TRAIN TICKETS AVAILABLE?

Exhibit chair Karen Lewis would like to know if anyone has old Pere Marquette or Chesapeake & Ohio train tickets, perhaps in a scrapbook, that we could scan and reproduce for display at the newly renovated ticket master’s office in the Depot. If so, call the Harsha House or Karen at 547-9743.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

May the New Year be blessed for each one of you! Getting past the holidays is consuming; now that we’ve managed that it’s time to focus on our next big project. You’ve probably heard by now that the Historical Society is going to hold an Earl Young home tour this summer, on Wednesday, July 28th to be exact. We have seven of these delightful homes lined up; we shall be forever grateful to the owners for their willingness to open their homes for us. There is already considerable interest in the “Mushroom Houses,” and this peek at the interiors is going to be very popular. It will be a huge undertaking for us; we will hope for the help of all our able members. Please call me (231-547-2742) or Harsha House if you can help in any way. We’ll need start-up money for advertising and printing, and many bodies on deck for the tour itself. I look forward to hearing from you!

Mona Bergeon
