Valentine Potluck! Silent Flick!

It’s time for our annual Valentine’s Potluck Dinner!  The past three years were so enjoyable we’re repeating the format.  Once the tables are cleared, we’ll settle back for an old-time silent movie night complete with popcorn!  And that old flick would be?  One of the all-time greats, the  swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks Sr. 1920 epic romance “The Mark of Zorro!"

By day, Don Diego de la Vega is the swishy, ne’er-do-well son of a wealthy California rancher.  By night Don Diego is the masked hero Zorro who fights to rescue his fellow citizens from the tyrannical depredations of villainous Capt. Juan Ramon. Lovely Lolita Pulido despises the effete Don Diego, but she loves the dashing Zorro, never dreaming that the two men are one.  Thrill to how this all unfolds upon our rolldown silver screen!

When: Tuesday, February 1@ 6:00 P. M.

Where:  The Depot

Bring a dish to pass, a serving utensil, and your own plates and utensils.  We will supply coffee, tea, cups, and napkins, plus microwaves if needed.

And in keeping with the tradition of many previous years, instead of a ticket price we ask everyone to bring a Valentine card or two, either signed personally or from “A Secret Admirer” as the entrance fee.   We will have a decorated box at the door to collect them.  They will later be distributed to shut-ins and the elderly who may not receive one, and are always deeply appreciated.

MUSEUM & STORE HOURS IN FEBRUARY

THE MUSEUM WILL BE CLOSED DURING FEBRUARY, but the side office door will remain open from 11 a. m. to 4 p. m. Tuesday through Saturday for those who need to conduct Society business or make a store purchase.

EXCELLENT DUES RETURNS

Sending out dues renewal reminders via first class mail has proved to be an excellent idea over the past two years.  Payments for the 2011 membership year are arriving steadily.  Those annual members who have not yet sent their dues in, please take a moment to do so as soon as possible.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members:

Annual reports are due again from various Board members, directors and committee chairs, which causes one to contemplate the year of achievements just past.  I am so proud of our Society, not as president but as a citizen of Charlevoix.  This is truly a unique place with a fascinating and delightful history.  Unlike many small towns, this one recognized the value of its past and the Society has done a fantastic job of preserving it.  So many people have worked so hard and given so much. This year the whole community received the benefits of a huge event which brought in hundreds of people from all over the nation.  The event was a smash; people were begging for tickets and now they want to know when it’s going to happen again.   I’m talking about the Earl Young House Tour, of course, just one of the amazing things the Society has accomplished.  I could go on: many less publicized acts of caring effort would fill lots more space.  Suffice it to say: Congratulations to all who’ve helped.  You’re wonderful.

President Mona
