The complete turbine housing weighed 60 tons. This rotor alone weighed 27 tons, and its blades turned at 3600 rpm. Of all the components of Big Rock Point, only the reactor vessel was custom designed, by General Electric. Everything else was off the shelf of the power generating industry. The turbine had originally been intended for a sugar mill.
