The information center at Big Rock Point opened in early summer of 1961. By the end of the year over 50,000 people had visited, and by the end of the second year almost 150,000 had come through. By 1965 the visitors register listed people from every state in the Union and 58 foreign countries. Big Rock Point was alleged to be the second most popular tourist attraction in Michigan after Greenfield Village. By 1968, over 500,000 visitors had arrived in Charlevoix to see the plant and learn of its operation. The center closed in 1974 due to economic reasons.
The scale model of the plant pictured here has been refurbished and is the centerpiece of the 2006 exhibit. Additionally, a hands-on radiation detector demonstrates the degrees of radioactivity inherent in common household and natural objects.
